JAI 72 - just add some colouring

Hi there,

well did you enjoy the black and white challenge last week - I can tell you there were some absolutely stunning entries!! This week at Just Add Ink it's all about colour again - or more specifically we want you to just add some colouring. Now you can use a wide variety of tools and media. For example blender pens, aquapainter, markers, chalks, copics etc. I have acquired a growing collection of copics, so I figure I had better put them to use and I must admit they are very fun to use (the hard part is keeping Mama's special texta's out of the hands of her beloved offspring!!). Now I am very much on my L-plates so please look kindly on my colouring efforts. I'm hoping to get some sort of hands on lesson soon! So here is the end result. The colours are a bit dull in this one unfortunately :(

And a super simple inside.

This is intended as another card to go in my girl's birthday party stash, so I started by looking through my DSP and pulled out an old favourite (now retired)- Candy Lane. I picked out one of the striped patterns and used that as a mat on my base (Regal Rose then Choc Chip), and also stamped my image on it so I could paper piece the girls dress. Aside from that little bit of paper piecing I bravely (or perhaps foolishly) coloured the rest of the image in using Copics (see Recipe below for marker details). After fiddling and adding layers of colour I trimmed the whole image out and mounted her on square of Pink Pirouette, with piercing detail, that in turn was mounted on a scalloped Choc Chip mat. Finishing touches included adding the sentiment using oval punches, and a knot of Choc Chip grosgrain, Oh and to the image itself, dazzling diamonds to all the cupcake sprinkles and crystal effects to the cherry, the little heart hair clip and shoes.

Just Add Ink 52 - Just add a sketch

Hello there,

Hope you all had a good week. I’m wrapping mine up with a half day today as we have some family coming to visit, my Mum and Dad, as you can imagine the kids are very excited about their grandparents visiting even though they only saw them about 3 weeks ago. (Smile – Don’t you just love how excited they get about everything - it makes living so joyful!).

Ok onto the new Just Add Ink challenge – this week we have a sketch for you. Here it is.

From the very beginning something about this sketch said “bag or pocket” to me. But I ignored it for quite a while only converting my card to a pocket card literally as I was sticking it all together! I also dug through my retired DSP stash and pulled out some lovely old bright springy type paper. So here it is.

With the insert pulled out (urk - sorry about the colour tones in this one)


I started by flipping the sketch upside down and then since I had settled on using some of the Petals and Paisleys DSP I started with a Pretty in Pink base (originally cut as a horizontal card – I just chopped off the back when I converted it to a pocket), layered that with some Tempting Turquoise. Layered some DSP at the top, and stamped matching flowers on the bottom. I used a Martha Stewart border punch to create the top of the pocket and used my Top Note die, to cut more DSP that was added to the bottom. To embellish that I added a die cut felt flower and some Pretty in Pink wide grosgrain ribbon. Having decided to make the card into a pocket I needed an insert for a message, so I cut some more DSP and Whisper White with the Top Note die, SNAILed them together and folded it in half. That slipped into the pocket and even echoes the border and bottom top note curves – magic!!

My Miss almost Six (we are on a countdown at the moment – every morning it’s how days till my birthday Mum!) thought this was pretty good (smile again) so it’s another card I can add to my birthday party stash!

Inkspirations 34 - roarrrr shhh!

welcome back to my entry for this weeks Inkspirations challenge set by the lovely Makeesha. This week Keesh set a sketch and yikes was it a tricky one! Here it is.


I decided to go with a baby card - no specific recipient in mind although I'm expecting to become an Auntie again in the next week or so but whether the bub is a boy or a girl is going to be a surprise. But at least now I have the boy side covered ;) Here it is.


I started out by thinking I wanted a blue/brown lion - so next I had to work out which brown and blue. I ended up settling on Brocade Blue and More Mustard and pulled some old DSP out of my stash to match. So having found all the bits and pieces I set to work!

I started with a Brocade base, then added a Mustard panel with DSP (stripes horizontal) then added DSP (stripes vertical) to the rest of the card base (after piercing around the edges). Then a Mustard panel with more DSP (a more muted blue stripe) was laid. The central lion panel mostly rests over this. I stamped my lion three times once in Brocade as the base, which I then cut using my circle nestabilities. The other two were used to trim out a Mustard lion head with mane and one little Brocade lion face. These two were layered over the original Brocade lion using dimensionals between each layer. The final touches were to add lots of buttons. On the left hand side I threaded and tied them all together with kitchen twine, then glued them down with Tombow. Two little Mustard buttons were added as accents on the right too. Lastly I stamped "Welcome baby" using Chocolate Chip onto twill and added it to the bottom of the lion with a 5/16 silver brad. The inside was finished off to match.

This card ended up being a bit of homage to retiring and retired product - I quite enjoyed having a rifle through my stash - I hope you liked it too.

Baby Bear

Hi everyone,

well this week I'm back with a card to welcome a baby girl to the world. The starting point was to use Makeesha Byl's weekly challenge - this weeks it's a sketch, with a circle element - love those! And since I love to use DSP (patterned paper) I couldn't pass up the Just Add Ink challenge this week too. First up here's the sketch.

The challenge is hosted by one Keesh's DT this week, Cindy Major and Cindy added the extra element that you must use something you've been hoarding. Not hard in my case ;) I knew I wanted to put my button bellied teddy bear in the middle of the circle. Next I hunted for some DSP that would fit the pastelly brown/ pink theme I wanted to use. Having selected the DSP I then stamped my bear on and trimmed it out, then mounted him up on dimensionals above a contrasting DSP pattern. Then added a pink chocolate threaded button to his belly with Tombow. In retrospect I think the button is actually a bit too big. The bear is framed by a Close to Cocoa layer then a large Pink Pirouette scalloped circle. Down the bottom I added my most hoarded element a Build a Brad, had them for over a year and never cracked the tin. I used the Brad (backed by another hoarded element a Felt Fusion flower) to anchor the sentiment banner. To balance that all out I added a couple Felt Fusion Too flowers (letting all the stops out on hoarding now!) layered with a threaded button to the upper left of the scalloped circle. I couldn't go past using a new EK success punch I picked up this week to give a lovely border to the vertical sketch strip and it nicely echos the scalloped cirlce - I hope! I added two ribbons over the top of the Close to Cocoa strip. I tried something new for me, dyeing ribbon. I used a sponge dauber and my Pink Pirouette ink pad to dye some white taffeta - since I wanted to keep the pink/cocoa theme. Finally to finish off the front I stitched around the edge of the top layer using some pale pink thread. The inside is finished off simply to match the front. Overall I'm mostly happy with the end result - one other reservation, beside how big the bears belly button is (try saying that when you've had a couple of glasses of wine!!) is that the front is over cluttered. But you can't get it right 100% of the time and I do like it!

Happy New Year

Good morning everyone,

I hope you all had a nice New Years Eve, we had friends over for a BBQ which was really nice.

I thought I would start the year with a quick post with some of my development Christmas cards, the ones I made before I came up with my final design.

This first one isn't my favourite - I think it would have looked better with a larger sentiment.

I really liked the effect of the All About Christmas wheel (R) on this one, something I will keep in mind for next year.

This last one is my favourite but just wasn't so practical for mass producing - so lost out on those grounds.

I won't go into construction details, it should be fairly easy to see how they came together. All details are in the recipes below.

An Ornate Trimming

Well once again its time for me to load my entry for Makeesha weekly challenge – this week a sketch. Here’s the sketch.

I’m still on my Christmas card crusade so the type of card was easy to decide on, and this is what I came up with.

I’ve been doing a lot of fairly white cards lately so I decided to try something a bit richer and more ornate. With that in mind I started off with a Real Red base, on the top I added a new Cuttlebug folder I aquired recently- Victoria in Baja, which gives a nice ornatish effect that ties in with the broad stripy Ski Slope DSP (I really love this DSP - for some reason Christmas ones are often so dark and muted but this has lovely bright patterns). I also decided to crack open some new Spellbinder dies - Labels 9 which I thought would suit the feel. So I cut out a large red label 9 shape then the next size down in white (making sure it was just big enough to fit my Tree Trimming ornament on). To get the white border on the red layer I left the die on and traced around the inside edge with a white gel pen. I was quite happy with the effect. I simply stamped the largest ornament in real red on white and then trimmed it out, mounting it on dimensionals in the label 9 panel. Before doing that I did add the ribbon and white brad. The sentiment I stamped then punched out with the curly label punch, just doodled around the edges with a red marker and then slipped the end under the ribbon. Three little red pearls (timely aquired only just on Sat) finished off the card. My overall feeling about it is that I do like it (90%)but I feel like something isn't quite there but I haven't been able to figure out what that factor is. So it will just have to stay as is.

A Very Merry Pink Christmas

Hi all,

I’m trying my hardest to convert any challenge to a Christmas card at the moment as a way of making a dint in my Christmas cards this year. But when I saw the colour challenge that Makeesha had set this week I had my doubts about whether I could do it. Here’s her colour pick.

However I saw that Cindy Major had put together a really nice Christmas card with the colours so I thought why not! And this was the result.

The card design was very heavily influenced by a card Nichole Heady made recently (see the first one in this post); I also used her snowdrift templates for my DSP at the bottom. Although I had to extend the templates both width wise and height wise. That suggested to me that the standard US card size is smaller than the one we use here in Oz which is something I hadn’t realized. So I started with a Pretty in Pink base and I stamped this with stars from Holiday Spirit (R) using white craft ink. Over this I added two contoured strips of DSP along the bottom, first a remnant piece from Berry Bliss (R), then over that some Basic Gray DSP from the Hostess pack in our catalogue this year. The edges of the DSP have been roughed up with the distressing tool and I also added dazzling diamonds along the top edges using two way glue. You can't see the sparkle in the picture unfortunately. The central image is the Christmas tree from Holiday Spirit, I first inked up the stamp in versamark then in Basic Gray, stamped it onto Pretty in Pink and sprinkled over clear embossing powder. It came out darker than I expected – closer to Black actually. But then since black is one of the challenge colours that was fine with me. Next I tried something I have been wanting to do for a while – try out my Prismacolour pencils – well the white anyway. I used the white pencil to colour all the pink areas within the tree. To finish off the tree I added some pink rhinestones as baubles for the tree. Under the tree I added a little strip of black checked gingham ribbon. Then matted the pink layer onto gray and white. First rounding all the corners. The final element is the sentiment added in the bottom left, also with a couple of rhinestones. I quite like how it turned out.

Pink, plum and burgundy

Hi there,

The guideline for the second Creatalicious challenge was to use pink or plum with burgundy and green oh and some ribbon or lace. I did include the green but I also changed it to pink and plum and here is the result.

And here's a side view to show you the layering and a glimpse of the inside.

To balance out using several colours I started by using a white base. I stamped out several flowers in a mix of Pink Pirouette, Pale and Perfect Plum and Bravo Burgundy, mostly onto Whisper White but I did stamp two Perfect Plum ink onto Pale Plum cardstock flowers. Then I punched or trimmed them out and layered them up in a sort of descending cascade from right to left. I decided on using Kiwi Kiss as the green as it seemed to lift and brighten the whole colour combo – so I stamped three leaves and fitted those into the flower cascade. The ribbon component is a bow of Kiwi Kiss satin added onto the largest layered flower. To finish off the flowers I added some retired buttons (Pretty in Pink and Burgundy) and some pale pink brads. To balance out the flower cascade I’ve added the sentiment in the top LHS corner, framing it with a little paper piercing.

I finished off the inside with a little simple stamping and masking of flowers.

Hope you like it – I must admit I thought it was an unusual colour combo but I am quite happy with how it turned out. It’s certainly making me think about using my Plums and Burgundy inks a bit more frequently.

An Aussie Christmas

Hey ho,

welcome back it's time for my card for Makeesha weekly challenge, it was an inspiration challenge this week, a very white and red, bright festive lunch from the looks of it. Here's the pic.

I decided to go with the festive idea anyway and make a Christmas card, fairly straight forward but I was quite happy with the result. Here it is.

The idea of using a red flower as/on a Christmas bauble sprang to my mind when I was mulling over the image (while as usual putting my Mr 1.5+ to bed). So I got out my Eastern Blooms (I so love the big flower in this set, but its been a while since I've used it - too much new rubber - Petals Pizzazz for example, just finished a card with that set last night too - so stay posted for when I can find the time to get it online - sorry I digress). Ok I stamped the big flower in Real Red on Whisper White, then using my circle cutter system (Martha Stewart) there were a few curses as what I was cutting slipped and I had to start again but eventually I managed to get my flower cut out and a larger circle border in Real Red. I layered my flower layer onto the red base, add one end of the word window punch with a hole for hanging and there you have a bauble! To finish it off I did add another flower trimmed out over the top and mounted on dimensionals, and just added a subtle hint of glitter on the little white spots in the middle. The bauble was hung from some of the lovely extra wide striped RRH ribbon in our current mini using some silver cord. I fished around in my white scraps and found a large piece of white cuttlebuged with the snowflakes folder and decided that it gave a subtle but nice texture to the background and in keeping with the festive spirit. Finally right down the bottom I just stamped the sentiment simply below the snow flakes.

Sorry no inside today - I usual keep most of the space free in Christmas cards so I can write a fair bit in there.

Inkspirations Colour Challenge 9

Well this is my last week as guest designer for Makeesha Byl’s Inkspiration challenges, so I want to start today by saying a big thanks to Keesh for asking me. It has been lots of fun and I’ve loved the challenge. I would also like to say a special thanks to the design team members (Karen, Cindy, Amy, Renee and Kirsty) and anyone else who has dropped by and left me a comment. (As an aside if anyone has had trouble with that please scroll down and read the brief post and comments before this one).

So on to today – here are the colours Keesh picked for this week.

Yep I’m definitely sure I find colour challenges the hardest, and perhaps my cards this week reflect that. Yes two cards again – well I couldn’t only do one after the last three weeks.

As I started to say, while I am happy with the way they turned out, better than I expected actually, they don’t quite have what I would call “that certain something – a zingy – I got it right” quality. Anyway enough babbling here are the cards.

And a side view so you can see the butterfly that has been cut out and mounted over the first one, as well as a glimpse of the inside.

Well this first one is the girly one. I’ve seen some lovely meadow/butterfly cards and so I decided to try my hand at that. First using Pocket Silhouettes I stamped the “meadow”, then cut out a large oval from the stamped image and a framing scalloped oval using oval nestabilities. To balance the butterfly in the upper right I added a punched flower/filigree brad topped with a Ruby Red brad. Then finally to balance that and to carry the Ruby Red through I added the sentiment in the lower right corner. A little bit of piercing and some DSP basically finish it off.

Here's a side view to give you glimpse of the inside.

My second card is my go at a masculine card – one for Father’s Day coming up in September here in AUS. I broke out my new Jumbo Outline alphabet to stamp dad on some Basic Gray DSP from the hostess set in our new catalogue. At the very end I decided I needed more impact from the letters and then layered each one onto either Whisper White or Ruby Red cardstock. The letters are laid over some crimped Baja cardstock (which at the very end I ended up piercing the borders of). To bring in the Ruby Red I rolled my (retired) Builders Bits wheel in Ruby Red over some white cardstock. The base Baja layer was also stamped with the Canvas (retired) background stamp. The finishing touches are two large pewter brads and hemp twine which I pulled over my Basic Gray ink pad and some distressing of edges.

Really Rusty Flowers

Hi there again,

well for my second go round at Makeesha latest challenge (a colour one this week) I decided to try and use the latest Mojo Monday sketch. Posting it today will probably make it my earliest Mojo past ever ( it's usually right down to the wire). Anyway lets start with the colours and the sketch.

I'm am a bit happier with how this card turned out, its doesn't seem quite so dark (and gloomy?) as my first try (see my last post) and I did have fun making the flowers - anyway here's the card.

Lots of retired stuff in this one, but it gave me the effect I was after so thats the most important thing. I used Vanilla and Rust as the primary colours and the Chocolate and Sage as accents. I had my first go at bashing around hodgepode too. I decided I didn't want the fastener on the LHS so after the kids were in bed out came pliers and hammer and I went to it. In the end I tried using my Cropodile which did work very effectively but it was a tad rough so, cough cough, you can't see those bumps and scratches can you! I like the end effect though. The only other point to note is that I rock and rolled the big Looks Like Spring flower, first stamping it in Sage, then rolling the edges in Rust then I just tried to roll the end tips in Chocolate Chip. The rest is lots of punches and some piercing.

H.M.A.S Welcome Baby

Hi there,

At first when I saw Kristina’s Werner’s latest colour challenge I wasn’t entirely sure how the colours would all go together but when I got all my card stock scraps out to start this card, I realized they make a great combination. As a colleague at work and his wife had just had a baby boy, and the inspiration photo was baby bibs I decided to stick with the theme and make a baby card. The colours are so bright and cheerful and came together to make, I hope, a fun card, celebrating the arrival of a new little boy. Here are the colours for this week.

Like my last Mojo card (scroll down to my last post) I made the background paper myself using Seeing Spots and Rivetting and the striped ribbon to echo the patterns on the baby bibs. I watercoloured the image with markers, ink pads and aquapainter. To make the ocean I used a small strip of cuttlebug, cut it to match the waves and sponged the top with white craft ink.

To finish the card I might use my Black Glaze pen to write in the babies name on the bow of the boat - but before I do that I want to check the spelling - it wouldn't be a good idea to get it wrong !

Kristina Werner Colour Challenge # 39

Hi there,

when I first saw the colours for the latest colour challenge - I was gobsmacked - it certainly wasn't a combo that I thought came to me naturally. First I had an idea of trying to combine the last Mojo Monday sketch with the challenge and I also also had a simpler idea. I decided to go with the simpler idea first - just as well because my almost one year baby boy started to throw up at 9 pm last night and didn't stop for a couple of hours. So it was a late night - of NOT card making. However I did manage to finish my simple version this morning. I still have Pick-a-petal in my head, so I mulled over the colured petals matted on black, blacked stamped petals matted on colour but in the end the version I liked best was black stamped onto coloured card. So here it is - very simple - but I kind of like it.

Card recipe:
Stamps: Pick a petal, Short and sweet
Card stock: Whispher White, So Saffron, Green Galore, Real Red, Black
Ink: Basic Black, Real Red
Accessories: Wide Real red grosgrain ribbon, Real red and black brads, Mat pack and piercing tool, Dimensionals, Snail adhesive

Makeesha's Colour Challenge #3

Hi there,

well this was a challenge - chocolate chip, ruby red , blue bayou and very vanilla. The colours seemed very masculine but Makeesha, who does some awesome work, proved they can be "girly". So I decided to take the tough road and do a girl card with lots of chocolate chip. I must admit I was really pleased with the result especially as its a bit different from the cards I've made before. Here it is:

I decided to make the background chocolate chip but I wanted the brighter colours to really stand out, so I stamped the polka dot petal in Ruby Red on Very Vanilla and then cut the petals out with a large rim of vanilla. The centre of the flower I stamped with blue bayou to tie in the the blue top and bottom. The petals and centre are all up on dimensionals, the centre a double layer. I scalloped the blue bayou at the botton, used the word window punch to cut out a window for the sentiment, added some blue bayou ribbon, then paper pierced all around the edge, a double row down the chocolate chip sides. Oh and added two pewter in the top corners.

Stamps: Pick a petal, and Short and sweet
Accessories: Dimensionals, Pewter brads, Word window punch ( can't live without this - thanks for letting me borrow it Sam), Blue bayou double stitched ribbon, mat pack and piercing tool, glue dot, scallop edge punch.
