JAI 118 Just add Mae Collins

Hello there,

well we had our first -5 degree night here this week - it was just wee bit chilly and alot frosty the next morning. I must admit to chickening out of my walk that morning - I had a cup of tea instead ;) 

This week the Just Add Ink challenge is to CASE one of the team and this time round it is the lovely Mae Collins who I had the pleasure of meeting last year at Convention. So go check out Mae's blog and find something to inspire you. Mae's card below was my choice - I loved the watercoloured flowers and the slightly distressed look.

Now my take on it.

I definitely went with the distressed vintage theme for mine. I kept Mae's layout pretty much as was and coloured my hydragea bloom using ink pad lids and an aquapainter. Twice. The first time was the base image, which served as a good practise. Then an extra bloom that I then trimmed out and mounted on top of the base. I finished off the bloom by adding little dots of clear glaze pen to the centre of the tiny blooms. You can't go past a bit of distressing, sponging, and inky layers to get a bit of vintagey feel. I also dug out a bit of long retired hodgepodge to accent the ribbon and finish off the front. Got to say I was happy with how this turned out and I will be colouring that hydrangea again!

Vintage Fifth Avenue

Hello there everyone,

I’m coming to you today (as usual) with Makeesha Byl’s weekly challenge. This week it was a colour challenge, the combo sounded interesting but what to do with them. This was Keesh’s colour pic.

For some reason the colours made me think vintage - may’be because they were all slightly muted tones. I wanted a big flower feature and the only rose I have is Fifth Avenue Floral – quite modern in style – so what could I do but vintage it.

I started by stamping the large rose three times in Ruby Red onto Very Vanilla. Then I inked up my Linen background in Ruby Red, then stamped it off twice then stamped over the roses. Next I inked up my En Francais in Ruby Red, stamped off once then stamped over the roses. I trimmed the flowers so the final one would have three layers, then using a sponge dauber I added depth with Ruby Red around the edges of the petals. I also sponged the edges on the back side so that when I curled the petals a bit you would get glimpses of the Red. The flower layers were mounted on top of each other using dimensionals. The final touch was to add some little vanilla pearls to the centre. The flowers was mounted onto a Very Vanilla panel that I had stamped with first Linen and then a tiny script text, in Mellow Moss. I distressed the edges and sponged around them with more Mellow Moss. Some little leaves, for the rose, were also stamped onto this layer in Mellow Moss. I used some of the Bella Bleu paper for the panel down the bottom, distressed and sponged, separating that from the upper panel with a border of Brocade Blue. The bottom edge had been punched with the Eyelet border punch. Over the top I layered ruffled Vanilla grosgrain ribbon, that was sewn on. All of these panels were layered onto a large Brocade Blue layer, again distressed and sponged, then that was attached to a the Very Vanilla base, sponged around the edges with PTI Chamomille ink. The final touches are a largish Vanilla grosgrain bow, with a nice big button tied with linen thread and an oval silver hodgepodge frame, to house the sentiment (Mother). The crystal effects I put over it has unfortunately made it a rather blurry. Perhaps I could argue that this suits the whole vintage effect? It is readable and I do like the lacquered layer (mind you I also can’t remove it without destroying the card!!). I might try using some red stazon on acetate and laying that over and see how that looks. End result I kind of like it which is a good end for something that is not my normal style and somewhat out of my comfort zone. So thanks for the challenge Keesh (and the bonus – I have one Mothers day card done already!)

Really Rusty Flowers

well for my second go round at Makeesha latest challenge (a colour one this week) I decided to try and use the latest Mojo Monday sketch. Posting it today will probably make it my earliest Mojo past ever ( it's usually right down to the wire). Anyway lets start with the colours and the sketch.

I'm am a bit happier with how this card turned out, its doesn't seem quite so dark (and gloomy?) as my first try (see my last post) and I did have fun making the flowers - anyway here's the card.

Lots of retired stuff in this one, but it gave me the effect I was after so thats the most important thing. I used Vanilla and Rust as the primary colours and the Chocolate and Sage as accents. I had my first go at bashing around hodgepode too. I decided I didn't want the fastener on the LHS so after the kids were in bed out came pliers and hammer and I went to it. In the end I tried using my Cropodile which did work very effectively but it was a tad rough so, cough cough, you can't see those bumps and scratches can you! I like the end effect though. The only other point to note is that I rock and rolled the big Looks Like Spring flower, first stamping it in Sage, then rolling the edges in Rust then I just tried to roll the end tips in Chocolate Chip. The rest is lots of punches and some piercing.

Kristina Werner Colour Challenge # 42

Hi there,

had an extra day at home this week as my little munchkin was sick so in between cuddles with him I worked on this card. I figured it had to either go the baby way or flower way, and in the end I went with flowers. I started by playing with scraps of the colours, which are lovely, see the box below.



Through a punched hole on one scrap I could see the DSP flowers below, through it - so I decided to try that as part of the design.



In the end the card came together with minimal stamping and lots of punching, and of course there was some embossing and I used crystal effects to make the centres of the little flowers and shine up the little layered ones under the buttons (and attach the buttons at the same time).

Masculine Mojo

I really liked the sketch that Julee put up for Mojo Monday 73 this week. Here's the sketch.


Aside from the sketch my starting point was my choice of colours which were inspired by a t-shirt of my son. When I got out my colour wheel, Tempting Turquoise, Old Olive and Black were the closest match to his t-shirt stripes, it seemed somewhat improbable a combination but I decided to give it a try. This is how it turned out...

I am quite pleased with the result actually. The only thing that doesn't come out clearly in the photo (overcast day here today) is that I used a clear glaze pen to go over the lighter bits of the tree leaves and trunk so you get a bit of a reflective sheen in the right light. I used the Forest branches cuttlebug folder on the top to complement the Old Olive DSP panel on the bottom, oh and the Happy Birthday tag was made by using the Terrifics Tag set and punching out a selected section using the word window punch. Finally to get the image I coloured in the tree with markers blending them a bit with a blender pen before stamping, after I stamped the image I went over it with an aquapainter to get a more blurry effect.

If I have time I will edit this later to add a pic of whatever I do to the inside - just haven't got there yet - and as the baby needs to go down for his nap soon and the computer is in his room I'm running out time. Not to mention Mr Linky closing.

I actually have another Mojo 73 card but I won't get that posted for a few hours at least (or worst case senario tommorrow) and might miss the cut off to please come back and check it out.

Kristina Werner Colour Challenge # 41

Hi there,

well it has been a few busy days and a very busy morning (first the food shopping then putting the baby to bed for his nap and once he was a sleep taking Miss 4 out to the playground to meet up with our playgroup). Finally I'm home, everyone's had lunch and I can try and get this posted before Kristina's Mr Linky closes. Here is her inspiration picture.




Anyway when I saw Kristina inspiration photo I decided to do something that would reflect the dresses and that evolved into ...do a dress. It came together pretty much as I had imagined in my head and I'm reasonably happy with it - it could be tweaked to be better but I'm not quite sure how. If anyone has any suggestions let me know - please :)

Here is a close up of the top cuttlebug panel that I outlined with white gel pen - I was very happy with how this bit turned out.

Birthday Girl

my beautiful daughter, Eleanor, turned four years old a few days ago- and was she excited. Her design brief to me for her birthday card was that it MUST have glittery flowers. So given that starting point this is what I ended up with.

And here is a close up of one of the glittery flowers.



Using the Bali Breeze paper as colour inspiration, I made Rose Red and Pumpkin Pie the main colours, with highlights of Taken with Teal and Old Olive. Using the In the Spotlight stamps and various punches, I layered up little stacks to make flowers, finishing each off with a brad. Needless to say there was glitter all over the kitchen which acts as my stamping space for days. To balance all that vibrant colour I used the Number Collage cuttlebug folder, colouring in the central number four with a Rose Red marker before actually running it through the cuttlebug. A bit of Pumpkin ribbon and little silver hodgepodge finish it off. Finally the inside was stamped with four of the 5-petal flower stamp, in alternating Pumpkin and Rose Red, in a vertical row down the outside edge. Sorry I don't have a good photo of that.

End result she was happy (although in all honesty she was more interested in her presents) and I was happy too :)
