JAI 180 Just add colouring

Hello there,
despite a certain chill spring is in the air here and my garden is filled with the scent of hundreds of pink blossoms. My card for this week's Just Add Ink challenge was also made for a pretty little blossom  - my niece - for her birthday! So what is the challenge - sketch, colour? nope ;) this week we want you to Just Add Colouring (you can use pencils, markers, crayons etc....). I always find that while colouring takes a while it is a really relaxing and fun thing to do :)

I rifled through my DSP stash to find something girly and fun (pink) and that helped determine my colours. Using copics matched to the SU! colours I coloured in my stamped fairy girl - twice. On one I paper pieced her dress (inside) and the other (front) I added a dotty pattern using copics.  Then both girls were trimmed out. I used a paper dollie to frame her on the front (it also helps mute the DSP patterns a little) and had her stand on the sentiment. A bit of sparkle, shine and a big bow finish off the front.

I thought this cute little fairy was just perfect for the little cutie it was intended for!

Inkspiration 59 - Printed Petal Flower

Hi there,

now I just have to ask has anyone else had a morning start like this? It goes:
DH to me: Its Mum's birthday tomorrow (his Mum) you've made a card for her, haven't you?

Now I will say he was partly (mind you only partly) joking, and after about 18 years I should be aware of the fact that he is crap at preparing for birthdays and so should have his Mum's birthday written on the calender (I do now!). But it gave me a valid excuse to "slave" away stamping Sunday afternoon - ah its a hard life sometimes ;)

Of course ever looking of ways to multi task I used the Inkspiration sketch challenge this week for the card. You can see Keesh's sketch below.


This card is a real mix of old and new. Old DSP and a new stamp - I got Printed Petals at the 2010 convention and this is its first inking up. So here is the result.



I started with a completely different idea but saw this pink flower pattern and it reminded me of the large flower in Printed Petals so that's how this evolved. So I settled on a Regal Rose/ Early Expresso combo. So a square Regal Rose base, then an Expresso scalloped square mat (I was delighted when I realised that this was just the right size!!) then the DSP. I went for clean lines on the long vertical panel and also used the flower to break up the lines more. The flower was inked up in Regal Rose and Versamark then embossed with glittery clear embossing powder. For contrast I used Early Expresso for the stem and leaves. For the three horizontal bands I used satin Expresso ribbon for two and the sentiment for the last. The inside was finished off with another flower.
This one, despite having brown on it, got the big thumbs up by Miss 6 - but she decided it was OK for it to be posted if it was going to her Nana :)

Inkspirations 32 - A Wish

well welcome back :) This week Makeesha Byl has a colour challenge - a very yummy colour combo indeed. Here it is.

I'm still on a push to make lots of birthday cards (and just as well as my Miss 5 has three birthday party invitations this weekend !!) so when I saw the combo that Keesh put up I knew that was the way to go. Here is the result.



A card I saw earlier in the week by Dawn McVey in this post caught my eye, and so I decided to try and use that as my sketch starting point. I also pulled out a stamp from my stash that had yet to see ink but is quite cute so I thought it could work - my Miss 5 however was not to happy as she says she doesn't have a face!! Despite the lack of face I went ahead anyway! To stamp the image on watercolour paper I used a little trick I've picked up from DanielleDaws who usually embosses her images onto the watercolour paper - and it works a treat!! - thanks Danielle - as the embossed lines really reduce and any bleed of colour from one area to another. Anyway having embossed the image, I then got out my aquapainter and watercolour wonder crayons - slowly adding depth to the image. I did use a bit of choc chip marker at the end to get extra colour into her hair and then blended it in. Having coloured her in - I then also decided to do some paper piecing - so thats how it ended up a mix of the two but I think it combined the bit of the best of both. The final touch was to add dazzling diamonds to her wings -can't go past a little bling. I used my circle nesties to cut her out, as well as a choc chip frame. The image was laid over some dotty Saffron DSP (from Tall Tales) which I pierced around the edges, then adhered to a Regal Rose mat and then Choc Chip base. Finishing elements for the front are a strip of Regal Rose ribbon, embellished with some buttons and the sentiment tag, using my new Sizlet tags. I had a bit of fun with the inside stamping some fluttering dotty butterflies and adding a pierced flight trail from the "happy birthday".

Inkspirations 31 - Sweet Always Birthday

I'm back this week with a card for Makeesha Byl's weekly challenge. This week it was a sketch.


And here is my card...




This took me two takes - although I was pretty happy with my first version but Miss 5 gave it the thumbs down, and since its intended as a birthday card for one of her friends I thought I had better have a second go. I did find this sketch rather challenging, its definitely not one that came to me naturally and as a consequence I did jiggle the width of some of the layers around but I figure that still counts. Being a little girls card pink was the way to go so I pulled out my Sweet Always DSP and found two patterns to mix and match for the different layers, then layered those onto a Very Vanilla mat and then a Rose Red base to up the pink factor. For the other three horizontal layers on the card I added two vanilla punched borders (Apron Lace - love it), and a strip of wide Rose Red ribbon. All of those were adhered in the right order (well the one I'd settled on ;) then sponged around the edges with Regal Rose and then I stitched around the edge of the panels with pink sewing thread. To finished off the card I added a flower/ sentiment embellishment, as per sketch. I punched a 2" scalloped circle in Rose Red, then sueded the layers apart, on top of those I added two Pink Piruoette Felt Fusion Too flowers, then the circle sentiment, another Rose Red fusion flower then a rhinestone brad. The final touch - some Old Olive greenery. The inside was just finished off simply to match.

Stripey Blooms

well stripes and glitter seem to be a feature at the moment (and there is more to come now that I think about it ;)). Today's card is for the latest sketch challenge from Makeesha Byl. Here's the sketch.

I did put away my Sweet Always paper after the last card but pulled it out again for this one. Here is the end result.

It was really the stripey pattern that inspired the card. I decided to use markers and colour in the various sections of the largest Eastern Bloom (in Chocolate Chip, Regal Rose and Pumpkin Pie) to match the DSP. To finish the flowers off I added a little clear rhinestone brad in the centre of each, mounted them on dimensionals and then added dazzling diamonds to the Pumpkin stripes using the two glue pen. The stems are some crimped Chocolate Chip. To frame the flowers I used two different pieces of DSP, paper pierced around the edges of both panels, added a few Chocolate brads, rounded some corners. To separate the two DSP panels I used a strip of crimped Pumpkin, laid over with Chocolate Chip and then Pretty in Pink ribbon. Thats it bar a little Chocolate Chip bow!

well I said I had two Mojo cards this week, and this is the second one. I had a new Tilda stamp, (and probably only one, as to be honest while I have seen some gorgeous cards, I just think the fact that she doesn't have half her face is just a bit too weird! However the artist must have had a lapse as she has done a side view of Tilda so you can see her nose and lips - thats enough for me.) Anyway back to the card I also had some yummy new Sweet Always DSP that I figured would go perfectly. The layout for this weeks Mojo Monday sketch seemed perfect, until I realised that when stamped she would point the OTHER way - duhh!! Can I blame that momentary lapse on my head cold? I then decided to get radical and figured well if you can turn the sketch why not flip it to a mirror image so thats what I did. First of all here is the Mojo sketch.

And here is the card. I decided to cut it as an A frame.

Besides wanting to use my new Tilda stamp and the Sweet Always DSP, which basically dictated the colour scheme, I also wanted to use a whole strip of broad Pumpkin ribbon as the long vertical panel. (In an earlier card, I used it to cover a small feature panel). The panel on this card was edged with my Fiskars Cristina Re Floretine punch, a bit more narrow Chocolate Chip grosgrain ribbon and some crystal effects to highlight the hearts, a rhinestone brad, dazzling diamonds on her wings and it was all done. Actually I did do a lot of fiddling with the colouring, tried watercolouring with SU ink pads, colouring with SU markers and then colouring with Copics, in the end I went with.... colouring with Copics. It turned out Ok - I would have liked a lighter orange for her dress but couldn't find one at the art shop, but overall, for really, only my second go with the markers, not too bad. Although if anyone has some tips to share I would love to hear them!

PS: I have started putting a "teaser" photo at the top, an idea I pinched from a very dear and talented friend - hi Sam :)
