Just Add Ink #453 Choose Two

Hello there,

well with Easter rapidly approaching if you have kids I'll just bet they are anxiously awaiting that wealth of Easter chocolate! In addition to their eggs, my two often get some packaged up from me as a special little gift. This year the mini pizza boxes proved to be perfectly suited, as was this week's new Just Add Ink challenge. This week Jan has given us an Easter themed Just Choose Two challenge. Here it is. 

And here is what I came up with.

I kept it super simple, adding colour to the pizza boxes using a sponge brayer, then some texture by flicking over ink drops, Wink of Stella and white flecks of paint. These sweet bunnies are the first digital images I've ever downloaded and it was actually a really simple process.  Having downloaded and sized them to suit me. I coloured and then die cut the images. Added them onto a layer of foil to add some extra shine and then glossed up the eggs and tiny flowers with a layer of glue (left to dry overnight). I was pretty happy with how it all turned out and I think the kids will appreciate the extra Easter surprise.

JAI #303 Just add something begining with E

you could say the plethora of chocolate eggs appearing in the supermarkets heralding the imminent arrival of Easter was the inspiration for this week's Just Add Ink challenge. This week Tina is asking us to Just Add E. Now this means the main elements/ or theme of your project must be something starting with E. That could be Easter (wink) or it could be embossing, elephant, egg, a colour like Elegant Eggplant or even envelope! 

As you can probably guess I have gone with the Easter theme. I decided to make a special little Easter package for my two munchkins. Nothing too complicated and they can actually be opened up (with chocolate inside that is a given) without destroying the packaging - bonus for Mum ;)

These are super simple to create. Simply cut a piece of card stock (A4) in half lengthwise and then score at 4.5, 5.5 and 10 inches. As you can see the two packages are very similar with just a few personalised features. On the Bermuda package to echo the dotty embossing I used an oval framelit to create a curved edge to the front flap. While on the Indigo stripe embossed package I just rounded the flap corners. Twine threaded through the three layers of cardstock holds the packages closed. To dress them up I added some fun and fancy bits first water colouring up some cute little chicks and then finishing with some colour coordinating flags, sequins and sentiment.

JAI #255 Just add ovals for (Easter)

we have a fun and possibly tasty challenge for you this week at Just Add Ink. It won't be long till Easter is upon us -so this week's challenge, from Nikki, is Just Add Ovals (for Easter).

I decided it was time to revamp the bunny egg boxes I made for my munchkins back in 2012. You can see them here. This time I gave the boxes an Australian feel.

As you can see they hold quite a few of the little solid chocolate eggs - yum! I started by doing an image search for punch art koala's and kangaroos and used an amalgamation of the images to work out the basic proportions. Then I pulled out my oval dies to select the right scale for my bunny boxes and went to work. I was tempted to go with bright colours but my conservative side said no stick with grey and brown (it's so boring sometimes!). So to add some interest I used dotty DSP for both tummies. Darling daughter picked the kangaroo to be her's as it had a heart for a nose :) Thankfully my sweet son is pretty easy going and accepted the left over koala as his (the eggs inside may have helped with that :)

I used the same dimensions as I did back in 2012 (you can find a basic template) in that post. To add just a little detail to the boxes I stamped them with a wood pattern prior to assembling them.

JAI 210 Just add an Easter bag, box or basket

well just in case you have, with great will power, resisted buying the increasing multitudes of shiny brightly coloured Easter eggs that are spilling off supermarket shelves we are giving you a legitimate excuse to buy some before Easter in the name of your art. Your excuse - well this weeks Just Add Ink challenge is to make an Easter bag, box or basket.  If some eggs essential for the photo shoot don't make it into the bag, box or basket - well that's between you and the Easter bunny - lol. 

I decided it was time to make some new Easter boxes for my munchkins, they used the Bunny boxes I made for them back in 2012 again last year. So here is the 2014 version.

 Basic Instructions

 Step 1: Cut a 12 x 12 sheet of Crumb Cake in half at 6" (15.3 cm). Then score at 5" (12.7 cm) and 7" (17.8 cm)

Step 2: Cut two 2 1/2" (6.4 cm) by 4 7/8" (12.4 cm) pieces of Crumb Cake for the sides of the box. Score 1/4" (0.6 cm) in from edge on both long sides and one short side. Mark a mid point 1" (2.5 cm) in from the bottom and diagonally score to the bottom corners from the midline. Score a central fold from the top of the side to meet the diagonal fold (as pictured above).

Step 3: Decoratively die cut the box top front and back and add embossed pattern
Step 4: Diecut a window in the front side

Step 5: Cut window sheet and using sticky strip secure on back side of the window. 
Tip: I rounded the window sheet corners so the sharp corners wouldn't hurt little fingers fishing around for eggs inside the box.

I quite enjoy the process of working out how to make a new box. The fact that you can make 3D items effectively from paper never ceases to amaze and delight me! I also enjoyed creating the little scenes on the front for the kids. My DD new straight away the one with the bunny was her's (Ok the flowers might have clued her in) and my DS seems to be quite happy with his duck. One point worth noting is that I made the Easter eggs peeping out of the grass using a small oval punch to punch the patterns from the little banners in the SAB Banner Blast stamp set. 

I did think of adding some ribbon handles but so far have left them off for aesthetic reasons but may in the end need to add them for practical ones like the kids dropping eggs everywhere!!

JAI 111 - Just add Easter

well this week we have a fun and possibly quite tasty challenge for you at Just Add Ink because we want you to Just Add Easter. Can you think of a better excuse to go out and buy some of the Easter goodies that are threatening to trip you over as you wheel your trolley through the supermarket aisles ;) You need them for your art - not to eat!! Of course I had to make something for my two little munchkins and what better then a bunny box each.

I started by guesstimating how big I wanted the box to be. A bit of eyeballing decided me on 2 1/2" square and 3" high. Having made that decision I drew myself up a rough template on some scratch paper. Hopefully the template picture below will make the following steps clear.

In total you need a piece of cardstock 10 1/2"(26.2 cm) by 6" (15.2 cm).

1) Score along the long side at 0.5", 3", 5 1/2" and 8"

2) Score along the short side at 1 1/2" and 4 1/2"

3) Cut out and remove the two marked little flaps

4) Cut apart the flaps for the bottom and top of the box. See heavily marked lines in picture above. Do not assemble box yet!

5) Having cut and scored my boxes, I stamped them both with a gingham pattern

6) Now cut out a window in what will be your front panel. I used a rectangle die. (If you eliminate the closing flap directly above the front you could probably do this with a punch).

7) Then I cut an oval window, sized smaller than the rectangle, into a piece of cardstock matching the ear colours

8) After adhering the oval panel to the inside of the front I backed that with a piece of acetate

9) Now assemble the box (Sticky strip is a good idea for this) and add bunny face, paws and tail.

10) Fill with Easter eggs

In preparation for this I had Googled easter bunny punch art - and somewhere saw someone use the heart as the nose. Loved this idea but unfortunately can't tell you where I saw it.  The rest I worked out by myself. Briefly face base - 2 1/2" circle; Ear bases and paws -  extra large oval. For the feet trim about 1/3 off and then reinsert one end back into extra large oval punch. For the ear tips insert one end into bottom of Ornament punch; Ear colour - Large oval and small oval (retired); Cheeks - 1" circle; Mouth - cupcake builder punch top; Nose - small heart punch; Eyes - 3/4", 1/2" and 1/4" (retired).

I sponged all the edges of the Crumb Cake pieces with Crumb Cake ink, and then used a Chocolate Chip marker to add paw and cheek details. Then using linen thread and a needle stitched on three whiskers to each cheek. It was a bit fiddly but the end effect was worth it.

The kids were delighted and are looking forward to opening the boxes at Easter :)
