JAI 57 Just add a colour combo

Hello there,
well I'm glad I left it to write up my post till today (Thursday night) because I have been feeling headachy and tired for the last couple of days and not at all cheery - but the headache cleared up late this afternoon hurray!! So feeling much more chirpy at the momment - just in time to welcome you to a new Just Add Ink challenge and this week we have a colour combo for you. Here it is.


I have got to be honest this one was seriously challenging! in fact I binned my first go at it. Overall the colours struck me as leaning more to the masculine side so that's what I went with.




Since I making a boys birthday card I kept it pretty clean and simple - a Cherry Cobler base, then a white mat stamped with the train engine in the three colours. I tried to generate a bit of interest by staggering the stamping in each row. To finish off a strip of River Rock stamped with the sentiment and one more train engine trimmed out and mounted and framed. Lastly a couple of brads in the wheels to finish up.

Choo Choo Colour Challenge

welcome back for this weeks first installment. Yep don't forget to check back in Friday PM when I post my guest design team card for Makeesha Byl's next challenge. But right now lets get on to today. Keesh's challenge this week was a colour challenge here the coloiur palette:



With my Miss 5 at (pre) school this year her potential to attend birthday parties is expanding and so I am working on building up a stash of birthday cards - so I hopefully won't be rushing at the last minute trying to throw something together - or gasp ;) buying one! So expect lots of birthdays till the christmas card push begins anyway lol!

So birthday card + boy somehow came together to this end (the idea somehow popped into my head as I was cuddling Mr 2 pre bed)

And the inside finished off to match the front.

I started by cutting an A frame Kraft base, then matted that with Real Red and Whisper White, polka dot embossed but turned to the debossed side. Next I cut a square Kraft panel and four squares - two Red and two Basic Grey - to layer over it. Now comes the stamping ;) - using Versamark I stamped my Choo Choo engine on Real Red, Basic Grey and Kraft and then embossed with white. Using the 1 3/8" circle punch I punched out an engine from each, slightly changing the engine placement on each. For the final panel it was either put a number (but I don't have the Big Shot alphabet dies - (yet) or a birthday sentiment. The good thing about using the sentiment was that it means I can use it for a 4 or 5 or even 6 year old - keeps my options open! So I stamped and embossed the sentiment, then as the finishing touch for that I added a row of piercing above and below. All the circles were then adhered onto a square, mounted up on dimensionals. The square Kraft panel was then mounted up on dimensionals over a strip of Real Red polka dot ribbon (turned plain side up) - and thats it. Well except for finishing the inside.

I have to admit to being happy with how this turned out - clean, stylish, great for a boy with some texture from the (de)bossing and shine from the heat embossing. It's nice when an idea comes together :) !

Red and Blue Choo Choo

It feels like time is flying, probably cause we have been so busy lately. Last weekends big event was a combined birthday party for the kids, my little Miss is now officially Miss 5, we celebrated a little early for our little Mr, he will hit the big 2 this coming Friday. When I get the chance I will post his birthday card – I’m figuring it might have been my last chance to use a cute animal. The birthday chatter ties in well for todays card, as it is a birthday card for a little boy turning 3 this week. For my starting point I used Makeesha’s weekly challenge – this week a really nice sketch.

I also knew I wanted to use the Choo Choo set. I wanted to use just the engine as the focal image but I also had the idea of making some background paper for the main image by stamping the train carriages. I decided to stick with a simple but effective boy combo of Real Red, Brilliant Blue and Whisper White.

I started with a 4’6 (approx 12 cm) square base in Real Red, then added a layer of crimped Brilliant Blue. Leaving a bit of a border so you see the crimping I cut a Red mat and layered that with Whisper White on which I had stamped the engine and other two big carriages across in two staggered rows. At the very bottom I rolled the train track wheel in Brilliant Blue. To finish that panel I added three blue buttons threaded with Red cardstock. For the main image panel I first stamped the engine in red on the white panel. Then I stamped a second, first inking in versamark so I could clear emboss it. The embossed engine was trimmed out and mounted using dimensionals above the first. A strip of crimped B. Blue laid over Red separates the engine from the sentiment. All of that was mounted on a piece of crimped B.Blue. I had to restrain myself from using ribbon (chant to myself - its for a boy, its for a boy) but the crimping does add some nice texture. So overall simple but nice.

The Night Train

Well its time again for Makeesha’s weekly challenge – this week a colour challenge. Here is her colour pick.

And here is my card.

It looked like a nice combo. Since I had a nice little boys set awaiting its first inking (Choo Choo) I went with a boys card. For some reason my concept for this card was a quilted bedspread with the train traveling across it. Then again may’be it’s because I just went to the Craft and Quit Show last week. The card itself is pretty simple, the base is Bashful Blue layered with Pumpkin Pie and Very Vanilla. I used my 1 ¼ inch square punch to get 6 squares each of Certainly Celery DSP and Bashful Blue DSP (from Spring Showers), then laid them out in an alternating grid. I used my white gel pen to faux stitch around the edge of each square. I stamped three of the train sections in Pumpkin Pie on Very Vanilla, cut them out and again went around the edges with my white gel pen. I also rolled out the train tracks and paper toiled a stretch of them out too. The tracks were SNAILed straight onto the “quilt” background while the train carriages and puffs of smoke are all up on dimensionals. To give the card some extra dimension I crimped the end of the Very Vanilla layer, as well as the lower layer of the sentiment banner. Basically Bashful Blue buttons with threads of Pumpkin and Bashful Blue cardstock finish it off. Oh and I also tried to give the train carriages some extra shadowing using inkpad lid ink and an aquapainter before finally adding some crystal effects over the top.
