Inkspiration 41 - Starry wishes

welcome back to a new week. Trying to squeeze in some crafting time this weekend was a challenge, thankfully not because Mr 2 was sick again - he's back to full strength - hooray! No this weekend we had friends visiting - which was lovely but really busy. But I'm up for a challenge :) so I did manage to find the time. Just as well too as I had to make a birthday card for my hubby! Luckily Makeesha Byl set a great sketch for her challenge this week (the challenge is actually hosted on Kirsty Brown's blog this week). Here's the sketch.

For my hubby I often reach for star related themes as he is an astronomer by trade. I knew I had a cute little rocket ship but there was one catch. I needed to watercolour it (Kirsty's extra challenge this week). Why the catch - well the whole body of the rocket ship was actually a solid stamp. But I had at hand my handy Versamarker ! So with some hope and a lot of trepidation I went around the edges of the solid stamp areas as well as inking up the rest of the stamp then stamped it on watercolour paper. Then I black embossed it.And guess what it worked!! Here is how it turned out.


To go with the starry/rocket ship theme I started with a Night of Navy base, layered that with silver then topped that with Night of Navy again. As per the sketch (which I rotated onto its side) I added some layers/stripes over the top Navy layer. For these I started with some silver cardstock dry embossed with stars, layered with red and navy felt ric rac. I stitched the ric rac down onto the silver layer using the opposite coloured thread. The central element is of course the rocketship - so having embossed it, I got out my watercolour crayons and aquapainter and watercoloured it. I also added silver to the nose cone from my Silver Encore pad using an old blender pan. To finish off this image panel - I added some Night of Navy stars, pierced all the way around the edge and added a button and a sentiment. The final finishing elements were to pierce around the edges of the top base layer and also add some silver embossed stars.

As a special touch for my hubby I added a bit of an interactive inside, cutting a spiral from a circle and adding lots of stars to the spiral. You can find a tutorial for this type of pop up card on Splitcoasters here.

yep I'm back again with my regularly scheduled post for Makeesha Byl's challenge. Its been quite fun this week to do two versions of the sketch Keesh set for the challenge this week. They are sooo different! If you want to see the first version just click here. So first up here is the sketch.

I started with the idea of making a birthday card for a boy (turning four - hopefully thats obvious;). I decided to try using the three primary colours so brace yourself this is BRIGHT.

I started with a Pacific Point base, layered that with a Real Red, then split the top layer between Whisper white rolled with Yoyo Yellow using Builder Bits (great wheel but long retired). The bottom half is pure Yoyo Yellow but embossed this time with the Perfect Polka Dots embossing folder. To follow the sketch (and hide the join) I added a strip of Real Red layered with some Pacific Point ribbon. For the main panel I used a very cute robot stamp I have. I stamped him three times, first in Pacific Point, which I used as the base, then in Real Red and Yoyo Yellow. To the Pacific Point base I added a Red tummy and Yellow hands and feet, all mounted on dimensionals. To finish him off I added a little red party hat and silver brads for eyes. Then I mounted him onto a scalloped Real Red rectangle. For the sentiment I stamped out four in Versamark and embossed with White, adding a blue star and silver brad to accent it, then tucked it into the ribbon band. The final touch are three little stamped red "screwheads" mounted up on dimensionals.

Zoom, zoom, zoom we're going to the moon

First let me say thanks to everyone who left me a comment last week I wanted to drop past blogs and say thanks individually but just haven’t been able to get to the computer. Why? well its been an interesting week. I had my youngest superglued to me for several days while he was feeling sick with a fever. Thankfully he is now on the mend. But the enforced time of being pinned down gave me lots of time to think and ponder the sketch Makeesha set for her challenge this week. Here’s the sketch.

The key for me is really to find a purpose for the card and once I decided that I wanted to use the sketch for a father’s day card for my hubby things fell into place. Since my DH is an astronomer by trade I usually try to do something that reflects that. Here’s the card.

Probably the trickiest part of the card was trying to find two something’s to use as templates to cut the large half circles on the RHS. They turned out to be a Milo tin and a small pudding basin – my circle nesties just weren’t big enough. Hmm obviously I have a hardware gap that needs to be addressed;). Anyway back to the card. On browsing through my DSP collection I came across the retired Spring Showers and I really liked the Bashful Blue stripy pattern. So I decided to use this as the base for the card. I used my Classic Stars wheel and using Chocolate Chip ink ran it over the half circle DSP. I made the sketch circle element the moon, made by first stamping a little moon, punching it out, then layering behind it a large circle of vellum, overlaying a chocolate chip circle and finally a circle of DSP the same size as the vellum. I got the idea for using the vellum from an element Cindy Major used on a scrapbook page she posted recently. The sketch horizontal “ribbon” feature became a spaceship headed for the moon. I inked up the stamp in Bashful Blue and then rock and rolled it in Chocolate Chip. Using my Jumbo Outline alphabet I stamped “dad” on the DSP and then paper toiled the letters out and lined them up on the long vertical panel. To finish off that panel and the half circle one I paper pierced along the edges of both. Final details are three stars on the LHS with Bashful Blue brads and a chocolate brad for the spaceship. The spaceship and moon, by the way, come from a really cute clear stamp set called Space Ships and Robots from My Cute Stamps. Overall I am quite happy with the result – I really like the combo of Bashful Blue and Chocolate Chip. Wishing you all a good week.
