it's Friday and that means its time for a new Just Add Ink challenge. This week Tina has asked us to Just Add A. This means that you need to add something that begins with A as the main focus of your project - it could be an animal, material, technique or fold. For example, ant or apples, acetate or an accordion fold.
I decided to add acetate and make a window in the front of my card.
Well this was tricky to photograph, especially in mid winter light :( I also had trouble getting rid of all the stray embossing powder speckles even with throughly dusting the acetate with my powder pal before embossing. So I tried some distraction by adding white gel pen dots to the inside - it works - from a distance. Aside from those issues this turned out ok. I played around with adding the sentiment on the inside in exactly the same place so that when the card is closed the white sentiment on the front has a slightly offset black shadow. One thing to remember when you make a card like this is that because of the acetate window you are going to see the back side of whatever you stick on the front of it. So to make it tidy you need to cover that all up on the inside with matching die cuts (you can kind of see that in the last picture).

butterflies are few and far between in the garden right now. Instead we see a thick layer of frost every morning but it's nice to dream of warmer times to come. Happily the challenge this week, from Di, at Just Add Ink is to Just Add Butterflies. By way of an update, did the school holiday coming to an end mean I got some stamping time - yep it sure did!
The beauty of the new Watercolor Wings set from SU! is that you can let your imagination run wild with colour combinations when stamping the butterflies. Having said that I stuck to a fairly subtle soft combo as I wanted something light, airy and fresh. I also experimented with adding a subtle background using a new stencil. First I sponged on some Pink Pirouette ink then versamark and clear embossed to get a shiny finish.The final subtle detail was to die cut the mats with a stitched die.

we just made it through our second major germ war in the same school term in time to send DD off to her school camp. My beloved offspring both kindly shared their germs both times with me too. Given that it's only the beginning of winter as you can imagine I'm really hoping we will be immune for the rest!! With the upcoming school holidays I am trying to plan ahead for upcoming events, so I was keen to use this week's new Just Add Ink challenge - this week it's a colour combo from me - to get a head start on Father's Day. Here's the colour combo.
And this is what I made for my Dad.
Texture, texture, texture is what you want for a masculine card and I packed a few different ones in here. Lots of earthy linen thread, shiny black embossed details, staples and stitching. I thought the black really added some punch into the more subtle colours of the colour combo. All the inky details add lots of depth too.

another week has whizzed past - seriously how can it be the end of May!!! I'm hoping it will slow down a little as we pull into the weekend - ever the optimist I can hope can't I. I do know I'm likely to catch up with a couple of friends so that is a good thing. Hopefully the weekend will give you some time to join us for the new Just Add Ink challenge. This week we want you to Just Add a Sketch. This week the challenge is from me :)
This was a little something I came up with for my MIL for her birthday.
I created the base mat by die cutting the large butterfly (from SU! Butterflies thinlet dies) and temporarily adhering it while I misted Blushing Bride over the top. I then removed my mask and set the mat aside to dry. After that all it took was to add a few additional stamped details over the top and build up my central butterfly medallion. I did scrunch up the two scallop circles to add a little extra texture and bling. I'm going to miss the rich gold of the Champagne glimmer paper!

I have something delicate and spring-like for you this week which is a lovely counter balance to the cold wintery windy weather and the house full of germs we've been dealing with for the last week or more. This weeks new Just Add Ink challenge was perfect as this week Di wants you to Just Add a Colour Combo. Here it is.
And here is what I came up with.
The colours just made me think of nature so I started with a Hardwood stamped base and for the pop on the top I made my flowers a bright Calypso. Special touches include trimming my flowers out and mounting them up over clear embossed fern fronds. That subtle sheen adds another texture to compliment the rough burlap and soft seam binding. Finally the sparkle of the sequins finishes it all off.

well it has been a busy, but good, two weeks. First school holidays and then off to meet up with many of the Just Add Ink girls at the SU! South Pacific Inspire, Create, Share convention. Catching up with them is always a highlight of my year :)
Now it's time to get back into normal routines and that means it's time for a new Just Add Ink challenge - this week we want you to Just Add Inspiration. Trish found these lovely photos to inspire us. You can pick one or many elements out and use them in your project - the colours, patterns, objects. Here's the inspiration picture.
And this is what I came up with. Something special for my Mum for a milestone birthday.
I was trying to create a leafy branch scene - just as in the inspiration photo. It occurred to me that the SU! feather stamps and dies actually could/ do look like leaves too. Well I thought it was worth a try. I would have loved to add in some thin twiggy branchy bits but decided that was just complicating things a bit too much. My 'leaves' are a mix of ink and embossing in a lovely array of blue hues, brown and white. The base is watercolour paper and I started with a wash over that and then stamped some faint splatter. Then placed all the leaves and finished by stitching all around the edges and adding some detail to highlight the sentiment. Little vellum flowers finish it all off.
It looks much prettier in real life! My Dad saw it and said it was something special so I hope my Mum felt that way too.

well finally Autumn is starting to set in - I can't tell you how much I love that fresh chill in the air and the increasing depth of colour in the leaves. Sometimes the colours are just so gorgeous I have to stop and just soak it all in! Hopefully you will enjoy the challenge we have for you this week at Just Add Ink just as much as I'm enjoying my Autumn weather - this week we want you to Just Add a Sketch, designed by Tina. I did struggle with the Autumn light to get a decent photograph though!
Soft, pretty and layers upon layers is where I ended up and where I started from, well I was intrigued and inspired by a post by Melissa Phillips here about adding wings to tags. I'm definitely in a vellum phase at the moment so don't be surprised if you see some more :)

well I have barely recovered from the birthday festivities this week (as you can imagine from a 10 year old's point of view the more birthday festivities the better the birthday) but despite that I do have a new Just Add Ink challenge for you. This week we have a lovely colour challenge for you (from me :). Here's the swatch.
And here's what I came up with on my first play with the new SU! butterfly thinlets.
I can't resist a second view - cause I really did like the way it turned out. This lets you see too that the butterfly is inset into the panel.
As you can probably guess I cut quite a few different butterflies for this, and piecing it together was definitely a labour of love - but in all honesty I do love being able to putter and I had a rare window the day I made this to indulge that. The really fun part was deciding which colours should go where - the pattern variations and colour combinations you could play with for this would be endless!
