JAI 154 Just add a pop up card

Hello there,
well coughing at home (Mr 5 and I) has regressed to drippy nose - thankfully not for me - yet! So it just as well that we have a fun challenge over at Just Add Ink this week. It is to Just Add a Pop up Card. Sounds like fun!! My starting point was to go over to the Splitcoaster's tutorial section and have a browse. I came across a tutorial for a pedestal pop up card. I was intrigued and put it to work for a birthday card. Here's the front - no hint of what is going to happen when you open it up. He he :0

Here's another angle so you can see how the monkey is up in the pop up tree - fun eh!! I hope it brought a smile to the birthday boys face!

I loved the combo of old and new in this, and how easy it is to make some cute trees and how those trees just come to life if you add a cheeky monkey!! When it comes down to it, pop up cards are just plain fun - so if you have a chance join in this week :) Do check the rest of the DT's super popping samples!

JAI 56 - Just add a sketch

Hello there :)

well its time again for a new Just Add Ink challenge. This week we have a great sketch for you. Here it is.


This is actually the second card I made for my Dad, after he had an operation recently. I was aiming for something cheery but still blokey - hopefully this will hit the spot.



I started with a Choc Chip base, then layered on some retired Good Morning Sunshine DSP. Down the bottom I just used Whisper White and stamped the sentiment. Next I added a scalloped lattice embossed border across the card, with some satin Daffodil Delight ribbon layered over the top. Then it was time for the main panel. For this I started by stamping some Kiwi Kiss flower stems, and then matching flowers in Daffodil Delight, the bottom one is popped up on dimensionals. Each flower was embellished with a different button. I decided to add a bit of whimsical touch and so added a bee to fly across the top of the flowers - another button, some cardstock and vellum. Lastly I mounted that all on a Kiwi base and added a small lattice embossed scalloped strip down the side. The inside was finished off with some more flowers.

So this one will be on its way to my dear Dad soon and hopefully it will bring some sunshine with it!

Inkspirations 53 - Froggy Thoughts

despite Keesh posting a really nice sketch I was stumped this week. No aim or image was capturing my imagination. In fact I had pretty much decided to just skip this week when all of a sudden I discovered purpose and image!! First here is the sketch for the Inkspiration challenge this week.


First up purpose - its kind of a serious one. My Dad is going to have some surgery soon, and he will be in hospital for a good week and then will have a several months of recovery. So I decided to make him a card that he can get while he is hospital to, I hope, cheer him up a bit. I went poking through all my DSP looking for something blokey but cheerful and happened on Good Morning Sunshine and it seemed perfect. (Funnily enough I have hardly used any as I just couldn't figure how to use it, but this weekend I used it to make two cards for Dad - I'll be posting the second in a few weeks). Ok after all that rambling here is the card.



Ok a Pacific Point base, cut square (4 1/2 inches/ 11.5 cm), layered with some birdy DSP, this was pierced around the edge. Then I layered a panel with another DSP, and cut the panel base for the image in Pacific Point. For the image I stamped the "frog" image in Versamark on watercolour paper, then embossed with black embossing powder. I watercoloured the image using ink pad lids and my aquapainter. I also pierced around the edge of the image panel and watercoloured up to that to make a border. Once the colouring was dry I added some clear glaze to the frogs eye and light blue glaze to the centre of the flowers. To finish it all off I pulled out some more of my retired stash - some Pacific Point ribbon and a Kiwi Kiss corduroy button, tied and adhered those below the image, as per the sketch, and added a sentiment. The inside was finished off with another frog inside.

So something to cheer my Dad up and hopefully you too :)

Hoot hoot hooray

this week Makeesha Byl's challenge was colour based. Here is her combo.

For some reason when I was mulling over ideas of what to do, while putting my Mr 1.5 to bed, and my mind turned to owls. The colour combo was a good match - yes but why owls? and then I remembered that I had gone for a walk around the annual flower festival we have here in Canberra (Floriade), apparently its the biggest in the Southern hemisphere, and it is quite spectacular. Anyway at the little shopping village at the festival I went past a little shop selling an iron worked owl (very cute) with his wings out spread and sitting on top of a 1.5 M long pole. It would have been just lovely to have him flying over the garden at home, and it was my DH's birthday so I seriously contemplated buying him - except I would have had to carry him all the way back to work!! a tad awkward to say the least. However if he is still there next time we all go for a visit he might just come home with us. So that's where the idea for the owl came from and here he is.

I've seen lots of cute animals made from punched shapes and I'm sure I could have found an owl out on the web but I decided to have a go myself first and see how I went - and I reckon he turned out quite well. I used the large oval to make his head, then nipped a dip out using my 5 petal punch, his eyes are made layering 3/4, 1/2 and 1/4 inch punched circles. His ears are two of the petals from the 5 petal punched flower. His body is another large oval, covered with overlapping "feathers" made using the small oval punch each cut in half and then the bottom edge sponged with chocolate chip ink. For his wings I used the large oval punch to punch one oval from Good Morning Sunshine DSP then cut it in half. Then using the small oval punch I punched out three ovals, one was cut exactly in half the other two roughly at one third of the way - so that I had a small, bigger and biggest "feather" for each wing. His feet are just three of the petals cut from one of the Spring Bouquet flower punch. He is perched on branch (narrow twill tape pressed into my choc chip ink pad), and leaves were just cut freehand from old olive DSP stock. The clouds were created by sponging some Not Quite Navy ink carefully over the top of a punched out scallop circle. Finally I pinched the "Hoot Hoot Hooray" from the SU set " Owl Together Now" and added "its your birthday" for the sentiment . I just used my mini alphabet set to stamp it out on scraps of Very Vanilla using the challenge colours and there you have it.

Bright birdie

Hi there,

we have just had a beautiful spring day here - its just so nice !! and I love seeing all the flowers in my garden. Actually the challenge Makeesha set this week was a perfect match - really bright sunny colours. Here is her colour pick

The colours just made me think of a bright sunny day, the blue sky and birds may'be cause my munchkins get me up early enough to hear them ;). So that's what I went with.

Sorry for the crooked photo but it was the only one where you could see the scoring on the bottom. Here's a straight one.

I started with a Pacific Point base and layered that with White, the bottom of whihc I scored like the panelling you see in the inspiration pic. The top half of the card I layered with some Summer Sun DSP from the Good Morning Sunshine DSP pack. The central panel is firstly some Pacific Point DSP from the same DSP pack, a white panel with a quirky little birdy stamped in Pacific Point. He has a yellow rhinestone brad for an eye, and is surrounded by branches stamped in Summer Sun. The leaves have been covered with crystal effects and glitter. The last elements are some Pacific Point ribbon where the top and bottom layers merge and of course the greeting - to match the bird.

I haven't finished the inside yet, was just too tired and tuckered the other night when I was stamping to get there.

I must admit I really like how happy and fresh this colour combo was - something I will go back to I think.
