Inkspirations 64

Hi there,

between a hefty household dose of germs and just being plain busy I haven't had the chance to play along with an Inkpsiration challenge for a few weeks - but an idea struck me after I saw the colour combo this week and so I decided to make the time! The colour combo is just perfect for the lovely Autumn weather we are having right now. Here it is. Aside from Autumn I thought the colours made me think lion - Rrrrrrrrr :) So I pulled out Fox and Friends and set about making a birthday for a little boy.
I settled on a Cajun Craze base, then a More Mustard layer, the next layer was split, embossed Whisper White at the top and Cajun DSP for the bottom with some Poppy Parade ribbon to cover the merge. For the main panel I stamped three lions, one in each colour as well as some spares that I then used to trim out manes and faces from so I could layer them over the base lions with dimensionals. I matted the lion panel and added some buttons to the top left corner, and used a round Happy Birthday sentiment on the bottom right. Then right at the end, once everything was stuck together I added the piercing frame around the main panel - sometimes you just know you need to add something!

I think the colours work well but my only reservation is that the birthday sentiment is too big and overpowers the lions a bit. Ah well I suspect little boys aren't quite as critical as me ;) The inside was finished off to match with another lion.

Thanks for visiting,

Kim

Inkspirations 55 - eat cupcake!

Hi there,

well we made it through Miss Sixes birthday, although she informs me her real birthday will be when she has a party!! Hmm I obviously still have some work to do and of course Mr almost 3 is old enough now to make it quite clear he wants a fuss and party and all things nice when its HIS birthday too! Ok enough chatter - onto today's card - for this weeks Inkspiration sketch challenge. Here's the sketch.

The DT did a fabulous job of showcasing wonderful ways to deal with this multi square design, in the end I went with repeating the same image. Here's what happened.

A square card (again but you see I've got a stash of envelopes just perfect for this size) 4 1/2 by 4 1/2 Melon Mambo base, layered with Early Expresso. Then I stamped my cupcake inchie 9 times on Whisper White and then punched them all out with the 1 1/4 inch sq punch. Mounted each square on dimensionals then added them to the Expresso layer. To act as the focal point I stamped my Party Hearty cupcake in Early Expresso on Whisper White. Then I cut a Melon Mambo top to match (using the stamp as a guide). I stamped a little vine image in Versamark on the Mambo top and white embossed it, then added a rhinestone to finish it. The cupcake top was mounted on dimensionals as was the cupcake. I used a decorative circle to frame the cupcake and some Melon Mambo ribbon to finish off the front. The inside was just simply finished off with a little inchie cupcake coloured in with markers.

I was thinking girls birthday card but since Miss Six tells me she doesn't like it because it has too much pink - say what!!!! - oh and there is no yellow (yellow is right at the top of her favourite colours right now) so given these glaring issues I've decided this is a big girls birthday card.

Thanks for visiting,

Kim

JAI 50 - just add a colour combo

Hi all,
well welcome to the first Just Add Ink challenge for 2011!! Goodness I just realised in a few weeks I will have been blogging for two years!! It's been so much fun, and you could say has changed my life (I now have my own lap top as one example - lol). So I am definitely looking forward to this year. Back to the challenge we have a lovely colour combo for you this week. Check it out.

I decided to make a birthday card - but what to use. The Pear Pizzazz said greenery of some kind - flowers?? but then I had another idea.

I started by colouring the large branch in with my markers (I usually try to be really strict with colour challenges - but this time I gave myself some lee way to use some Chocolate Chip for the branch). I used my Stamp-ma-jig to stamp the two branches to make a nice big party perch. Next I stamped my owl in So Saffron, then the birdies in Riding Hood Red and Elegant Eggplant. Then I inked up a bunch of party hats so I could pick which ever ones I decided were right. The poor owl looks like he had about enough for the night - I hope its not his party!! The two birdies continue their chat on the inside too. May'be Mr Owl has gone to bed by then :) The birds, owl and party hats are all mounted up on dimensionals over the branch. That was matted onto Elegant Eggplant with a Scallop Trim border. Oh and of course I added a big bow of Ridging Hood Red taffeta. This was mounted onto a Pear Pizzazz base stamped with Polka Dot, and the sentiment. The final touch was to add some Dazzling Diamonds to the party hats - cause a party card has to have some sparkle!

Thanks for visiting, don't forget to give the colour combo a try we would love to see what you make of it!

Inkspiration 37- Pennant Party

Hi everyone,

well I'm back for the Inkspiration challenge this week, after having last week off to visit my new little niece - its so easy to forget how tiny they are when their born - especially when you have two kids, now 2.5 and 5.5 years running around! So this week its not going to be a baby card ;) This week Keesh has picked out a nice combo of colours (see below) so instead I opted for boys birthday card (of the grown up type) since quite a few of the men in my family have birthdays coming up.

And here is what I came up with. I finally succumbed to the banner/pennant trend and I must admit it does give a fun look :)

I started with a Whisper White base, layered that with a Chocolate Chip and then added a top Whisper White layer embossed with the Perfect Polka Dots embossing folder. Across the top left corner I added a little string of three flags strung together with linen thread and mounted on dimensionals. For the central panel I started with a Choc Chip base cut with a scalloped rectangle nestability. I layered that with Whisper White. In the bottom left corner I stamped B is for birthday. Different bits inked up in the different colours and the central star is up on a dimensional. I finished off the top panel with a string of 5 flags in alternating colours, across the top right corner, again strung together with linen thread. This top panel was mounted over a strip of the (now retired) 1" Choc Chip grosgrain. I finished the inside off with another string of flags.

Kim

JAI 31 - just add a colour combo

Happy Friday everyone :),

this is my week off from the Just Add Ink DT but as usual I couldn't resist playing along, as the colour challenge this week sparked my imagination. Here's the colour combo.

The first idea I came up with thinking about these colours was a cupcake! May'be it was the Chocolate Chip as most cakes, especially if my DH has anything to say about it, are chocolate in this house. Now I've never made a cupcake card so I Googled it and perused a few blogs and found some templates - saw some wonderful tasty creations. But after all that I decided to try and make my own template. Here's the result.

As my starting point I used a tent topper card format, you can find a tutorial for it on Splitcoasters here. So to start I cut a Choc Chip base 4 1/8" wide and 9 " long, then folded over giving you a card base of 4 1/2". Then I just decided how much I wanted to taper the bottom in and used my cutter to trim the sides. Moving on to the Kraft layer I cut a strip of Kraft 3" high and about 9 " long. First using Real Red ink I stamped solid spots randomly over it, then I scored every 2/8". Once that was done I folded it up and down accordian style. I adhered it to the base using a mix of sticky strip and Tombow. Before I fixed the upper portion I tied choc chip grosgrain over the top, adding the little tags wth some linen thread. For the cupcake top I started by punching 6 (1 3/8 ") circles from post it notes then laying them out on some choc chip cardstock, making sure that the final dimensions was proportional to the bottom and would still allow the card to fit into a standard envelope. Using the outside of the circles as a guide I trimmed around the edges, then using that as a guide I cut my actual top out of Real Red DSP from Sweet Slumber. Next I dry embossed a swirl pattern onto the top and adhered the cupcake topper to the card. Now I had that in place I could trim the top corners of the base to match the curves of the topper. The final touch was to add lots of Dazzling Diamonds to all the swirl ridges on the cupcake top and just finish off the inside to match.

Thanks for visiting and I hope you get to enjoy a sweet treat this weekend :)

JAI 30 - Helping Hudson

Hi everyone,
welcome to a very special Just Add Ink
challenge. This week the challenge is to just add wheels and is in aid of the Helping Hudson fundraiser. To find out more about this, and to buy some super papercrafting tutorial bundles go to the Helping Hudson website.

Ok so what do we mean by Just add wheels - well it can be to use a stamp/image that has wheels in it, or you could use any stamping wheel or punches too.

I dug out my Loads of Love set so I could use the truck image, and because this challenge is all about wheels - I put it on wheels - well a slider anyway so it could move. I wish I could claim the credit for this idea but I CASEd it from
Bev Watt. So here is my version.

First with the slider all the way in

Now with the slider half way out

Having a Miss 5 in the house, who is all girl! I am surrounded by pink so you'd think I might avoid it, but no I went straight to pink for this one. I used a mix of old and new. The base is Melon Mambo, but I have also used Pink Passion and some Pink Passion DSP. I stamped the truck three times, using Versamark - onto Pink Passion DSP, silver and black cardstock, then embossed them all with black embossing powder. Then I trimmed out the black wheels and silver bumpers and added them to the DSP truck. I then backed that all with another piece of cardstock so the truck was nice and solid. Next I used Melon Mambo and my So Swirly wheel on some Whisper White. I then used my word window punch to create the slot for the slider mechanism to run in. The slider is basically a variation of a spinner card, you can find a tutorial for one of these
here on Splitcoasters. To make the mechanism I made two dimensional/coin stacks. Dimensional, 5 cent coin, 2 dimensionals, 5 cent coin. I peeled the cover off the first dimensional in each stack and stuck them evenly spaced onto the back side of the truck. Then carefully manuovered the mechanisms into the card stock slot. Still working on the back side I added alot of dimensionals to the back of the swirly slot layer and also attached the pull tab to the truck, after punching an oval out on the LHS of the swirly panel so that you can easily access the pull tab. The last thing I did before adhering the swirly/slider layer to its Pink Passion backing was to add some turquoise coloured satin ribbon across the front. The good news is that we have a wonderful range of SU! satin ribbon headed our way in the new catalogue beginning Sept 1.

Ok to wrap up the rest quickly - I added a scalloped trim across the top and down the bottom direct on the base Mambo layer I used Versamark to stamp a selection of mixed birthday greetings. Them embossed them with white embossing powder. This idea was another great one I picked up from a fellow demo - this time Sharlene Meyer. The inside was just finished off very simply to match.

Thanks for visiting - and why don't you take the time this week to add some wheels and then link your creation back to
Just Add Ink.

Have a good weekend :)
Kim

Inkspirations 34 - hoot hoot hello

Hi all,
welcome back :) This week Makeesha Byl posted a colour challenge and as usual I tried to play along. The combo tends towards the boyish, and my first thought was to make a boys birthday card pulling my retired By Land set out. But then as I was falling asleep another idea struck and thats what I went with. Here's the colour combo.

Oh and there is an extra challenge this week to add buttons.

OK so I started off by cutting a scalloped circle card base in Close to Cocoa, then I stamped that with a woodgrain pattern. Next I added a Not Quite Navy mat, then the top Kraft layer. I then impressed a woodgrain pattern onto the Kraft layer. I finished that by rubbing a bit of white craft ink over to just highlight the woodgrain a little. For the images I stamped the branch from Cheep Talk, and one of the party hats from Party Hearty in More Mustard then trimmed them out. Then I stamped the owl (from Fox and Friends) and the sentiment tag in Not Quite Navy, punched the tag, and trimmed the owl out. I used a More Mustard brad to attach the tag to the end of the branch and then added dimensionals to everything and fixed it all to the card front. The last touch - some buttons, threaded with silver cord, to act as twinkling stars! I just finished the inside off simply with another owl.

I think this card must be my all time winner for the number of different stamps sets used - six by my count!! But I think its a happy mix :)

Kim

JAI 28 - Just add a man card

Hi again,

welcome to my Just Add Ink DT post. The challenge this week is to just add masculine. But wait there's more - you also need to use a set colour combo, here it is.

My featured DT card was actually the second one I made for this challenge, my first one (which you can scroll down and see below) was a more sort of traditional male card kind of more targeted for my Dad. But then I started thinking I wanted to make something that reflected how my DH plays with the kids. They love attention, as any kids do and playing with Dad is definitely a highlight for them. So that was one starting point. The second inspiration point was a card posted by Dawn McVey way back in Dec 2009, however I can't link you to it as it has been removed from her blog for publication but perhaps you can take that as a sign that I do have good taste ;) Ok in Dawn's card she used horizontal strips of little repeated images to build the card and it looked really cute. Now I know I am rambling on and that is because I am a bit insecure about my end result but all of my lovely JAI colleagues assured me that it was good so I'm stomping on those insecurities and here is the card.

I started with a Baja Breeze base, cut A frame, stamped that with Polka Dots in Chocolate Chip. Then I cut three strips of cardstock, stamping a different repeating image on each. Since DH likes to play ball games with the kids I used the ones I found in Family Favourites - I would have liked to add a kite stamp though. Oh and one very important point I tailored the football to look like an Aussie Rules footy using a marker to ink up the stamp. You definiteIy don't want to get the wrong football on your hubbys fathers day card! I did have a little fun with the stamping trying to add some movement. The images were simply finished off with a little bit of colouring and some crystal effects on the cricket balls. The final touch is to add the D is for dad medallion. I used my Sizzex Timeless Type alphabet die (sooo love these) to cut a large D for Dad and then did some fiddly inking up of the b is for birthday stamp from Party Hearty to get my end result. The Kraft circle base was a 1 3/4 circle punch and I cut the choc chip mat using my Circle Scissors Plus. The inside I also finished off simply to match the front.

Now onto my orignal DT submission.

OK so here I started off again with a A frame Baja Breeze base. Then I added a mat of Chocolate Chip which was stamped with Sanded. This was layered with some Kraft DSP (from Urban Oasis). The edges of these two mats were distressed and also sponged with choc chip around the edges. I also added some piercing detail to the top and bottom of the Kraft DSP. Now for the image panel I started with Baja again, stamped that with Sanded, distressed and sponged the edges. I stamped and embossed the sentiment at the bottom, above that added a few loops of linen thread and above that the image. I inked up my tree stamp in Versamark, then in Chocolate Chip, and stamped on Kraft, then embossed with clear embossing powder. I distressed and sponged the edges of this, added a vintage brad to each corner and then mounted the image up on dimensionals above the Baja layer. The inside was finished off very simply to match.

Thanks so much for visiting, and please play along this week and link your manly creation back to Just Add Ink!

Just Add Ink 27 - Cupcakes

Hi everyone,
yep I've been a busy girl but I couldn't resist playing along with the sketch challenge this week from Just Add Ink. Here's the sketch

I'm still on a birthday card roll - so the first thing that came to mind was cupcakes, as I know that my Mr 2 and Miss 5 both think they are good! So here is the result.

Being intended for a 4-5 year old girl I had to put pink in there and so I went with one of my favourite colour combos - Regal Rose and Close to Cocoa (so so sooo sad that this is retiring). I decided to tranisition my cupcakes from all Regal Rose to all Cocoa, with two mixed ones in between. A little something was added to each cupcake - candle, birthday number or just lots of crystal effects and dazzling diamonds. Since I wanted the cupcakes to take the stage I kept the background pretty simple - white embossed with the Perfect Polka Dot folder. But I added a bit of extra texture by sewing pink zig zag all around the edges - my first time trying zig zag - and oh my I do like it :) I just ran a strip of Regal Rose grosgrain under the cupcakes (which were mounted up on dimensionals) and finished it off with a large rhinestone brad. I decided to leave the sentiment off as I felt it would have cluttered the front up too much and there are enough clues that let you know what the card is intended for ;)The inside was finished off to match. This one did get the thumbs up from my Miss 5 - yeh!

Its a great sketch so why don't you pop over to Just Add Ink and join in the fun!

Turning Two - the last giraffe

Hi all,

well our household has been a tale of woe for the last week, with a family sized, all member, cold. Seriously I reckon we have gone through two boxes of tissues between the four of us, and we still haven't reached the end! It's been that bad that I just had no energy to stamp or summon up inspiration!! Just as well I'm a week ahead on Keesh's challenge. I did manage to grab the camera this morning though after dropping Miss 5 off to school to photograph, an oldie but a goodie. The birthday card I made for my little boyo when he turned two earlier this year. The inspiration for the design came from a gorgeous card that Kirsty Brown posted here.

And of course an inside to match

I started with a base of Riding Hood Red, rounded all the corners, then stamped it with Polka Dot in RRH ink. For the image panel I started with a So Saffron layer, then layered that with some of the cloudy DSP from Sweet Slumber (love this!) on the top and Washington Apple on the bottom. The transition is covered by a sentiment banner (RHH and Baja Breeze) which steps down from the image panel to the base layer. I stamped some balloon strings onto the cloudy DSP and then stamped the giraffe from Wild About You in RHH, then trimmed him out. The giraffe is mounted on dimensionals over the strings, so he can hold them in his mouth - of course ;). Lots of buttons finish it off. Two as balloons, and two on the sentiment banner. Mr Two's birthday milestone is added as the final balloon, RRH stamped on So Saffron and then covered with crystal effects.

I was pretty happy with how it turned out - I figured it was probably the last time I could get away with using a cute animal for his birthday cards - they grow up so fast!! I'm pretty sure next year he would rather have a car or train etc - no cute and fuzzies!

Kim

Blushing

Hi all,

Well this post marks a milestone, wait for it…..it is the very first time that I have ever used Blush Blossom cardstock. It has always been one of those neglected colours, left waiting forlornly for me to pull a sheet out of its plastic sleeve. But this week was the week to face my cardstock demons as I decided to combine challenges again. A lovely sketch this week from Makeesha Byl and a colour challenge (which of course included Blush Blossom) from the Just Add Ink team.

I struggled initially to come up with an idea for this card, I actually wanted to make a birthday card for my Mum, and while I did end up making a birthday card I’m not sure that is where it will go.

I started with a Blush Blossom base, stamped that with Polka Dots in Cameo Coral. The next layer was Cameo Coral, scalloped at the top, with some piercing detail, I also added some crimped Kraft to the base of that layer. The main panel is Blush Blossom layered on Close to Cocoa. I pierced around the Blush panel, then using post it notes masked the piercing off and rolled the Happy Happy Birthday wheel across the bottom in Cameo Coral. I added a little strip of crimped Kraft below that. Next I stamped the cupcake from Party Hearty in Cocoa on Kraft, and in Cameo Coral on Blush Blossom. I cut the Cameo top out and mounted it on dimensionals above the Kraft one. The cupcake was SNAILed down in the middle after stamping three candles, inked up using Cocoa and Cameo markers. Two way glue and a coat of Dazzling diamonds finish off the cupcake. The last touch was some Kraft taffeta ribbon, I added Cameo coloured dots using an R24 Copic marker, then tied it in a bow adding a pinkish button threaded with a sliver of Kraft cardstock that I curled the ends of. The inside was finished off simply to match.

Hope you like, thanks for visiting.

Coffee and Cake

Hi there,

well for a change this card isn’t for a challenge and isn’t a Christmas card. That’s because I actually made this card for my husbands birthday earlier this year. So with out any more ado here it is. Almost closed..

Almost open - up pops the wiper!

And with a hidden extra message panel.

I started out with two premises. Firstly that I knew my hubbie would like something interactive, and secondly that he really likes his coffee. Fortunately not long before I was going to make the card I saw a tutorial Beate Johns had posted about a wiper card. Think of a car windscreen wiper to give you an idea of the motion. It’s a bit hard to show through just taking pictures of a card (watch the video Beate did) how it works but it’s quite fun. For the basic dimensions and how to put one together (very simple) just get the details from Beate’s tutorial. I knew I wanted to use a Chocolate Chip and Riding Hood Red combo for the card, so for the main panel I started with a Chocolate Chip base, then added a layer of Vanilla , then some striped RRH pattern from the Washington Apple DSP. For the first of the two accent panels (only visible when you “open” up the card), I used the same layering but for the second I went Choc Chip, RRH then a layer of different DSP from the Washington Apple DSP. I used this same DSP pattern to underlie the actual pop up wiper, which has a little birthday cake on it. I loved being able to use my new Choc Chip glitter on the ends of the candles! For the main image panel I used the coffee cup from Pun Fun, kindly lent by my good friend and talented crafter Sam. I stamped that twice, once on a Vanilla panel, then again on some scrap Vanilla. I wanted to create a saucer for the cup, so I masked the coffee cup on the panel. Then using some scrap, which had an oval punched out from it I just sponged Choc Chip ink over till I got the colour depth I was after. I trimmed out the second coffee cup after I had coloured in the bottom part of the pattern, using a Ruby Red marker. The Vanilla panel was layered onto RRH and then Choc Chip. I mounted it up on dimensionals carefully placed at the edges, as, since the card doesn’t have an inside as such, I added a little pull out message panel that tucks in under the coffee cup panel. So you can actually pull it out I made a little handle using the Designer Label punch, a jumbo brass eyelet and some ribbon. To balance out the handle I added brass brads and ribbon tabs to the top and bottom corners on the opposite side of the panel.

I’m pleased to say that my DH was very happy with the end result and so was I.

Thanks for visiting.
