Just Add Ink #431 Sketch

Hello there,
I managed to find some time to do some colouring last weekend and the end result was a Santa card, created just in time for this week's Just Add Ink challenge! This week Tina is asking us to Just Add a Sketch. Here it is.

My idea was to create a night time scene with Santa on his way to deliver presents under the light of a full moon.

I started by brayering a background, using post it's to mask off a zone to keep it lighter so the moon light could beam down on Santa. Once the background was dry I flicked some white paint speckles over for a snowy effect. Santa was coloured using blends markers and then trimmed out. In order to balance out the colours I added little banners of lights to the trees along side the 'road' using a retired set Confetti Celebration. That was fiddly but worth the effect. I twinkled up the lights with wink of stella and then a layer of glue that dries to a glassy finish.

The Just Add Ink DT have lots of fun projects to show you so please check them out and then come back and join in the challenge.

Thanks for visiting,
Kim

JAI #368 Use birthday to make Christmas

Hello there,
well this week has been a bit busier and also chillier (the kids enjoyed smashing the ice sheet that formed each night on our little fountain outside though)! The chill weather is actually a perfect segway to our new challenge at Just Add Ink this week. This week Kelly has asked us to Just add a twist - the twist? Well, to use a birthday set to create a Christmas card. So get out all your birthday sets and look at them in a different way - it takes a bit of creative thinking but it's such a fun way to see if you can get more use from your stamps!

Here's what I came up with.

I spotted the string of lights in Confetti Celebration and couldn't get the idea out of my mind of using them as Christmas lights. But what to drape them on?? I settled on the sweet little elephant from A Little Wild. I kind of liked the idea that he could hold them up using his trunk. It took some fiddly masking (I had to stamped the lights first so they would be in front of the elephant) which meant I had to cut teeny tiny light masks. But rather remarkably I managed to get everything in the right place first go! Then I coloured up my elephant and lights before fancying the lights up with wink of stella and then a coat of fine tip glue pen to get a lovely glossy sheen. For the background I brayered up a night sky, adding some texture with a splatter of white gouache and the gleam of gold stars. There had to be stars with for my elephant to wish on!

I was delighted my minds concept worked out so well (big smile). We'd love you to join the challenge this week, before you do though, go and check out the projects from the rest of the design team!

Thanks for visiting,
Kim

Just Add Ink #315 Sketch

Hello there,
have you ever been faced with a challenge and inspiration, that light bulb solution wouldn't come? That is what I felt like in the week leading to my submission deadline for this week's Just Add Ink challenge. This week Tina has given us a sketch - and well it was doing my head in :o trying to work out how to make this sketch work for me until I turned it upside down! First up here's the sketch.

Now here it is upside down ;)

Can you see how the shapes all taper to the top now? This is when inspiration came, and here is the result.

And a little surprise for the inside, which is rather tricky to photograph.

So I was talking about how the sketch shapes tapered to the top - and of course so do cakes which made me think of the Party Pop Up thinlets - and I went from there! I did take one more liberty with the sketch which was to pull the circle layer to the back (see the sunburst peeking out from behind the diecut?)

This is going to my hubby for his birthday this year so I kept the fussiness stripped back but I added in lots of texture by using water colour paper (Ok honestly I just love playing with water colour and any excuse will do right now ;), glossing up the diecut added lots of shine and having a pop-up inside is super important too (I have a tradition of giving hubby interactive cards). Once I had my inspiration this came together really fast!

The rest of the JAI team have wonderful projects to show you too - so do go check them out.

Thanks for visiting,
Kim
